Image: Quillin wants Sturm-Geale winnerBy Sean McDaniel: Unbeaten middleweight contender Peter Quillin (27-0, 20 KO’s) is hoping to get the winner of the September 1st fight between WBA Super World middleweight champion Felix Sturm (37-2-2, 16 KO’s) and IBF middleweight champion Daniel Geale (27-1, 15 KO’s) at the Koenig Pilsener Arena, Oberhausen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.

Quillin said on his twitter: “Peter Quillin ‏@KIDCHOCOLATE – I’m very interested in the winner of Sturm vs Geale.”

The 29-year-old Quillin is hoping he can finally get a title shot after toiling away for the past seven years in the middleweight and super middleeight divisions without much to show for it. Even after all this time, Quillin, #3 WBO, #4 WBA, #12 WBC, is still fighting guys like 43-year-old Ronald “Winky” Wright instead of higher ranked and arguably much more dangerous opposition.

Quillin’s problem is that his trainer Freddie Roach hasn’t been able to teach Quillin basic tools like using his jab, blocking shots and fighting on the inside. Quillin can’t do any of those things with any effectiveness, and has to throwing hard pot shots. He doesn’t throw combinations, which is too bad because Quillin would be a much better fighter if he were able somehow put his punches together in any real way.

Quillin is kidding himself if he thinks he’s going to get the winner of the Sturm vs. Geale bout because that’s not going to happen. Sturm will very likely beat Geale and if he does get past him, Sturm will have to either defend his WBA title against WBA world middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin or he’ll fall back to his normal habit of taking on a bottom feeder to get an easy title defense without risk against a bottom 15 contender.

Quillin is ranked high by the WBA and WBO, but it won’t matter. Quillin is still going to have to work his way up a little while longer before he’s locked in as a mandatory challenger. With any luck, Quillin could get a title shot in 2013, but likely not until 2014.
