Is Tyson Fury ducking Deontay Wilder?

Image: Is Tyson Fury ducking Deontay Wilder?By Scott Gilfoid: We’ve heard all the old arguments how unbeaten heavyweight contender Tyson Fury (19-0, 14 KO’s) has no interested in tangling with unbeaten prospect Deontay Wilder (24-0, 24 KO’s) because Fury only wants to fight top contenders and not prospects.

However, that argument doesn’t wash with me when you noticed that Fury’s last four opponents have been 2nd tier fighters not ranked in the top 15.

Look at how Fury has faced in his last four fights and you tell me if these guys are better than Wilder:

Vinny Maddalone
Martin Rogan
Neven Pajkic
Nicolai Firtha

Wilder would have a field day if he fought those guys. I can see him beating all four of them on the same night, knocking them out one after another with ease. Those guys would be in serious trouble if you put them in the ring with the 6’7″ Wilder because they would be taking some serious punishment from the American knockout artist.

Fury is said to be looking to get a fight against former WBA heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev (29-2-1, 18 KO’s) in November. I actually see that as another fight along the same lines as the guys that Fury has already beaten, because Chagaev hasn’t done a whole heck of a lost since beating Nikolay Valuev by a questionable decision in 2007 to capture the WBA title. The best wins that Chagaev has had since then have come against John Ruiz, Travis Walker, Kertson Manswell and Kali Meehan. There hasn’t been much quality, and Chagaev doesn’t look like the same fighter he once was. Fury would be just getting another easy fight for him against another older fighter for him to pad his resume.

Fury would get more respect by facing Wilder than he would by taking on Chagaev because Wilder hits much harder than Chagaev, is a lot taller than him at 6’7″ compared to 5’11”, and is a lot younger as well. I just smell fear coming from Fury when it comes to Wilder, and I don’t buy any of his excuses for not fighting him.
