Deontay Wilder needs British Boxing

Image: Deontay Wilder needs British BoxingBy John Woolford: Deontay Wilder (24-0, 24 KO’s) has of recent been receiving regular attention from the Boxing media. He does have talent, his right hand never lets him down but some fight experts have commented on his lack of ability.

As much as many would agree with that statement lets be fair to Wilder. He trains hard, he does the job, he’s an Olympic Bronze medalist but something within his ability is still missing.

It’s hard to become the finished product when most of you’re fights barely make it out of the first round. Back in 1985 Mike Tyson was blitzing his opposition in a way that hadn’t been seen since Sonny Listen was climbing the ranks in the early 1960’s. The only difference between Wilder and Mike Tyson is that Tyson threw killer punches with both hands moving around the ring like a scalded cat.

This is what Deontey Wilder is missing, that killer presence within his style of fighting, that destructive power of a hungry lion. On top of only relying on his big right hand, Wilder’s legs haven’t yet been tested and with legs like chopsticks he’ll be in serious trouble if someone like Price, Chisora, Fury or Haye bangs his chin with a power punch.

Deontay Wilder is not yet ready to fight the best within the UK or even Germany. But one thing that would be a string in his bow is hiring a new trainer such as the likes of Britain’s Adam Booth (trainer to David Haye and George Groves) or even Rob McCracken (Team Olympic coach for Great Britain while trainer to Carl Froch).

These two trainers have ample experience for men like Wilder, and with the London Olympic’s now at it’s end I’m sure Rob McCracken could find some time to contribute to that well needed extra technical ability for Wilder before he steps in the ring with a real professional heavyweight resulting in a serious injury.
