Chavez Jr. doesn’t feel that being the heavier guy is all that he has going for him in this fight, however, as he sees his boxing skills and intelligence as his main assets that will lead him to victory against the southpaw Martinez.

Chavez Jr and Martinez said this during the Max Kellerman face off on HBO this past week:

Kellerman: “Many people say Chavez Jr. is a light heavyweight or a cruiserweight in size.”

Martinez: “But history makes me bigger.”

Kellerman: “Do you think your size advantage will be significant in this fight with Martinez?”

Chavez Jr: “I think so. My size will be important to win this fight, but I’m not relying on weight to win. It’ll be my boxing and intelligence.”

Martinez: “You are lost then.”

Chavez Jr: “You are the one who is lost. You don’t know me.”

Martinez to Kellerman: “I’m not insulting him [Chavez Jr]. I’m just saying what will happen. I’m just telling the truth. What many of you won’t say.”

Chavez Jr: “He doesn’t know me. He doesn’t know who I am as a fighter. He has a career much longer than me. There’s a lot of people who don’t know about me.”

I think Chavez Jr’s weight advantage is going to be a much bigger asset for him than his ring smarts or his ability box. Let’s face it, Chavez Jr. isn’t a great boxer; he doesn’t move around the ring well, and he’s not a huge puncher. He’s a good inside fighter, he throws well to the body, and with his tremendous weight advantage over his opponents, he’s able to force them up against the ropes where he mugs them with his huge size. It’s not easy fighting a guy that out-weighs you by 20 pounds.
