Image: Chavez Jr-Martinez PPV undercard needs to be beefed upBy Chris Williams: If Bob Arum wants his September 15th HBO televised pay per view fight card to be a success he’s going to need to add some quality to the card besides just the main event between WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Sergio Martinez. When a boxing fan purchases a PPV event, they expect to see more than one good fight, and I don’t see much there on the card except for the main event.

Arum has a huge Top Rank that he could use to beef up the card to get boxing fans eager to toss away some of their hard-earned cash but I don’t see that happening.

This is all you get in the September 15th PPV card on HBO:

Julio Chavez Jr vs. Sergio Martinez – an excellent fight
Guillermo Rigondeaux vs. Marroquin – a mismatch
Matthew Macklin vs. Joachim Alcine – a mismatch
Rafael Marquez vs. Wilfredo Vazquez Jr – a mismatch
Mikael Zewski vs. TBA – Who?

That’s not enough quality fights for me to want to purchase this card. If Arum can strip off the excess and just sell the main event for $5 or $6, I’d go for it in a second but as it is now there’s no quality there on this card. There is one good fighter on the undercard and that’s Rigondeax but I hate seeing him facing a prospect in Marroquin. That’s just wrong to make that fight. When I see a champion like Rigondeaux, who will be defending his WBA World super bantamweight title, I expect him to at least be facing a contender.

I don’t know why Arum decided to put a prospect in with Rigondeaux, but whatever the case I don’t want to pay to see that. If Arum wants to scoop up a victim for Rigondeaux by all means pick a contender at least. I’ve seen Marroquin and I’ve seen him lose. I don’t want to pay to see him lose against the best fighter in the super bantamweight division.
