Trout, 26, had been hoping to get a fight against James Kirkland, according to RingTV. However, Kirkland’s surgically repaired right shoulder still hasn’t healed sufficiently for him to take the fight with Trout. IBF junior middleweight champion Cornelius “K-9” Bundrage was asked but he also had no interested in taking on Trout. That leaves Garcia as the fighter that may get the title shot against Trout.

Garcia has won his last three bouts after suffering a lopsided 10 round unanimous decision loss to Antonio Margarito in 2010. Margarito chose to box the hard hitting Garcia and did a surprisingly good job of neutralizing Garcia’s power. Since then, Garcia has beaten Jose Flores, Calvin Odom and Antwone Smith by decision victories.

Trout is coming off of an impressive – but boring – 12 round unanimous decision win over Delvin Rodriguez last June. Trout did a great job of out-boxing a good fighter in Rodriguez. However, the fight was like watching paint dry, as Trout focused on boxing and did little punching in the hard to watch fight. Before that, Trout has two previous title defenses against David Lopez and Frank LoPorto. The Loporto fight was a terrible mismatch in a fight that had no business being put together in the first place, because Loporto wasn’t in Trout’s league in terms of talent.
