Adamek faces dangerous puncher Travis Walker

By Allan Fox: 35-year-old Tomasz Adamek (46-2, 28 KO’s) is going to have to try and find a way to survive the huge shots from 6’4 1/2″ Travis Walker (39-7-1, 31 KO’s) on September 8th in Newark, New Jersey. Adamek hasn’t faced a puncher with as quite as much power as Walker has since he moved up to the heavyweight division in 2009. This could prove to be a more difficult test for Adamek than he might expect it to be.

Adamek was really bothered by the solid right hands and left hooks that he got nailed by WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko last September, but Vitali doesn’t have anywhere near the same kind of right hand power that Walker does. Walker is clearly a stronger puncher than Vitali and with more hand speed. What made Adamek so good when he first moved up in weight to the heavyweight division was his ability to move around the ring to escape punishment. However, Adamek has slowed down in the past year and he now gets hit a lot more than he used to. He still moves around a lot but the foot speed is gone now and he’s more hittable now.

Walker knows that the chances are slim that he’s going to be able to walk out of the ring on September 8th with a decision victory because that’s not likely to happen. We just saw Eddie Chambers fight well enough to win against Adamek last June and have to settle for losing by the scores of 119-109, 116-112 and 116-112.

I had Chambers winning the fight by four rounds, as did many other boxing fans who saw the fight. But it showed that it’s not easy to beat Adamek when he’s fighting at home in Newark. Walker is going to have to load up with everything and try and bomb Adamek out early. He’s probably going to have to chase Adamek because he’ll be scurrying around the ring a lot in the early rounds trying to avoid getting hit.
