Image: Warren: Khan's career is now going to be hard to rebuildBy William Mackay: British promoter Frank Warren notes that Amir Khan hasn’t improved much in the four years that he’s been working with trainer Freddie Roach, and after Khan’s recent 4th round knockout loss to WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia, Warren sees Khan as having some serious work ahead of him if he wants to restart his career.

Warren said to thesun.co.uk “Despite nearly four years under trainer Freddie Roach it seems Khan hasn’t learnt to fight on the inside and his defense…is still a major concern…His career is now going to be a hard job to rebuild. A big decision he must make is whether to keep Roach as a trainer.”

Khan’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya, the president of Golden Boy Promotions, sees Khan as being only one or two wins away from a big money fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. It’s very hard to believe that the boxing public will be able to stomach watching a mismatch between Khan and Mayweather if Khan hasn’t fully redeemed himself by beating Garcia in a rematch and at last four or five quality fighters.

I have serious doubts whether Khan can beat Garcia again even if he runs from him for 12 rounds, which is probably what Khan is planning on doing. He already said that he’ll box Garcia in a rematch and won’t look to slug with him. But that style isn’t going to work against Garcia, because he’s so good at cutting off the rig. Warren is right. It’s going to be a major job for Khan’s career to be put back together, and if Golden Boy puts him back in with Garcia immediately in a rematch in December, we could see Khan’s career iced. Another knockout loss by Khan and we’re talking curtains. His career will be finished and he’ll be a journeyman at that point.
