Robert Guerrero: I’m the champ at 147 now

Guerrero used a high punch volume attack in first 9 rounds and then clinched his way to a victory in the final three rounds after he tired out in the later rounds.

Guerrero said this after the fight as quoted by fightnews.com when asked if he would move down in weight to 140 “No, I’m the champ now. So, you know all the guys from 135 went to 140, and nobody wanted to fight me at 135, so why even do down.”

Guerrero’s got it wrong. He’s not the WBC champion, he’s the interim champion. For him to become the full champion he’ll have to beat Floyd Mayweather Jr. or get lucky and pick up the title if Mayweather chooses to vacate it. Guerrero would have huge problems with Mayweather if he were to bother fighting Guerrero. He won’t bother fighting him, though.

Guerrero is going to have to make the best of things and hope that he can get at least one good payday before he’s beaten. He wants Floyd Mayweather Jr. but his lack of popularity as well as his less than impressive performance against Aydin will likely get him ignored by Mayweather.

Unless his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions carefully matches Guerrero in his next fight or two, he’s likely going to get beaten because he doesn’t have the power or the speed at welterweight to compete with the really good fighters in the division. It was a good move to match Guerrero against Aydin, because he’s really limited fighter that only throws pot shots and lacks boxing ability. But there are number of fighters ranked in the top 15 that Guerrero will have to be maneuvered around by Golden Boy if they want him to stay the interim WBC champion.

The contenders ranked by the WBC are a virtual murders row for Guerrero. Any one of these guys would almost surely beat Guerrero and likely by knockout:

Victor Ortiz
Devon Alexander
Thomas Dulorme
Kell Brook

Guerrero isn’t going to beat any of them nor is he going to beat someone like Andre Berto. If Golden Boy makes the mistake of matching Guerrero up with any of those guys then they can forget about a Mayweather-Guerrero dream fight because Guerrero will get beaten. The only way Guerrero keeps moving forward is if they can keep finding guys like Aydin for him to fight because he doesn’t have the power in this weight class to be a factor.
