Image: Orlando Salido vs. Mikey Garcia could happen nextBy Dan Ambrose: WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido (39-11-2, 27 KO’s) wiped out Moises Gutierrez in the 3rd round last Saturday night in Mexico to remove the last obstacle between him and his next opponent, #1 WBO Mikey Garcia (28-0, 24 KO’s).

Garcia is highly ranked and well respected by the U.S cable giants and they no doubt will gladly scoop up a fight between Garcia and Salido.

Garcia, 24, hasn’t fought since defeated Bernabe Concepcion last March in a one-sided fight. Garcia’s power is excellent and perhaps a little better than Salido’s. However, Garcia’s work rate isn’t high and he tends to throw just one punch at a time because his opponents rarely can keep standing for long once he connects.

You’d like to see Garcia fight some actual quality opposition before he takes on a champion like Salido, because Garcia has been matched against a lot of weak opposition during his six year pro career. Garcia could be in for a shock if Salido doesn’t collapse onto the canvas from Garcia’s pot shot power shots. It comes down to this: If Garcia can’t produce a knockout against Salido, Garcia will take a terrible beating and likely get knocked out himself. Garcia doesn’t move well, doesn’t throw combinations well, and he’s easy to hit.

Salido will be all over this guy working him over with body shots and hooks to the head. Garcia won’t last long if he can’t get Salido out of there. It’s too bad Garcia’s management hasn’t put him in with anyone that can actually fight because he’s likely to be out of his class against Salido when the fight gets past the first few rounds.
