Khan can’t afford a third consecutive loss

Image: Khan can't afford a third consecutive lossBy William Mackay: It doesn’t matter whether Amir Khan dumps trainer Freddie Roach or not. What matters is that he wins his next fight, and that he doesn’t suffer any additional losses in the next couple of years.

Khan has lost his last two fights to Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia, and his excuses aren’t making it anymore. Khan said that his knockout loss to Breidis Prescott was a blessing in disguise, because it taught him not to take anyone for granted anymore. Remember that? Well it looks like Khan forgot that lesson, because he appeared to take Danny Garcia for granted by trying to trade with him last Saturday night.

It’s like Khan isn’t learning from his mistakes. He should have realized by now that he doesn’t have the chin to stand in front of his opponent without putting himself in danger. His trainer Freddie Roach was saying before the fight that Khan couldn’t afford to stand in front of Garcia, and that Khan would hit and run all night long.

That obviously was something that Roach went over in great detail with Khan during training camp. So why did Khan choose not to follow Roach’s game plan? He must have regressed to the pre-Prescott stage in his development by trying to slug with someone that he had no business slugging with. That’s a lack of discipline on Khan’s part, and once again he showed poor ring intelligence by fighting the way he did against Garcia. I really doubt that Khan will ever be a smart fighter in the ring, because he seems to do a lot of questionable things in every fight. But this is why he needs to have everything laid out for him ever round by his trainer.

Khan has got to follow the instructions of his trainer to the letter and not veer off course anymore. I think Khan can still make something of his career, but he’s got to have complete discipline to become a robot in the ring that will follow his trainer’s instructions without doing things on his own initiative. He can’t do that because he’s proven over and over again that he makes poor decisions in the ring.
