Kell Brook: I could be Britain’s next super star

Image: Kell Brook: I could be Britain's next super starBy Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten welterweight contender Kell Brook (27-0, 18 KO’s) fancies himself as the next star that’s coming out of the UK. It’s interesting that Brook sees himself in that role, because he’s still never faced anyone beyond C class opposition. Tomorrow night, Brook will be facing his first B level opponent in Carson Jones (34-8-2, 24 KO’s) at the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield, Yorkshire, UK. To be sure, this is a step up for Brook, but it’s hardly a step up to where Brook can call himself a star if he wins.

Brook told thesun.co.uk “The Americans are starting to hear about me now so I want to make a statement in this fight and take care of Carson in style. They are talking about me along with their elite fighters over there and saying ‘This English kid, he’s a force to be reckoned with. It’s looking like I could be British boxing’s next superstar. Sky Sports loves me.”

Oh boy, it looks like we got another Brit with an ego problem. Why in the heck are all these Brits bragging about themselves before they’ve even beaten someone with a pulse? You got Amir Khan talking about fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr. after having been exposed by Lamont Peterson, and then there’s Carl Froch talking big about himself despite having been recently beaten by Andre Ward.

Frankly, I’ll be surprised if Brook can even beat Jones this Saturday. That’s how limited Brook looks to me. His hand speed is nothing special, his arms are too short, his power is average and his defense is very average. I see Brook as pretty much right there with Carson Jones in ability, and there’s nothing there that suggests to me that Brook will be a super star. I’d have to really lower the bar by huge amounts to call Brook a super star or a great fighter. To me, he looks like a basic domestic level fighter that’s missing the major ingredients to be a star – talent, speed, power, reach…etc.
