Image: De La Hoya says about Groves: A star is bornBy William Mackay: Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya was very excited after seeing British super middleweight champion George Groves (15-0, 12 KO’s) dismantle slugger Francisco Sierra (25-6-1, 22 KO’s) tonight by a 6th round stoppage on the undercard of the Robert Guerrero – Selcuk Aydin fight card at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.

Groves knocked Sierra down in the 6th and then hit him with some finishing shots after he got up to get the stoppage.

De La Hoya was very impressed with Groves’ performance, saying on his twitter page “Thank you Showtime Extreme for showcasing Groves; a star is born.”

Golden Boy Promotions brought Groves over from England and wanted to showcase his talent for the American boxing fans to get a chance to see him fight. It works in Golden Boy’s favor because they really don’t have a major player to compete with the big dogs in the super middleweight division. If they can build Groves up then maybe he could be someone that can win a title in that division, as long as he’s kept away from fighters like Carl Froch and Andre Ward for a long time.

Grove may have looked good in beating Sierra tonight, but there’s a huge difference between fighters like Ward and Froch compared to Sierra. Golden Boy won’t be able to put Groves in with those fighters without bad things happening to Groves. They’re going to have to try and match him against the winner of the Robert Stieglitz vs. Arthur Abraham fight and hope that Abraham doesn’t take Groves apart with his power punching. Groves may not be ready for either of those two fighters, in particular Abraham.
