Image: Cotto needs to make a major play for a Mayweather rematchBy Jason Kim: Bryan Perez, the executive director of Miguel Cotto promotions, revealed recently that the two names on Miguel Cotto’s list for his next fight on December 1st are Saul Alvarez and Tim Bradley. Missing from that list is Floyd Mayweather Jr., who beat Cotto by a 12 round unanimous decision last May.

Cotto probably wants to make sure he gets the most out of his next fight by making as much money as possible. I think he’s going to lose if he fights the young Alvarez, and I just don’t that it’s really worth it to take a defeat against him if the money isn’t going to be really huge at this time. Alvarez is still building up to become a star and perhaps needs at least two more years before he gets there, if he ever does. This is why I think Cotto should stay far away from him and instead try and use his pull to get a rematch with Mayweather. That’s the fight that will earn him the most money, and it would be interesting to see the two of them mix it up again.

Bradley is a decent fight and one that’s very winnable for Cotto. I just don’t know that it’s a realistic option right now for Cotto, because Manny Pacquiao is very likely going to face Bradley in a rematch in November, and that’ll take him away from a fight against Cotto. Mayweather, however, still doesn’t have anyone scheduled to fight him and it would be interesting to see the two of them fight again.

Cotto’s career is starting to wind down now and he’s mainly going after the big names now and not wasting time with the smaller fights. Cotto’s former promoter Bob Arum wasted two fights for Cotto by matching him against Yuri Foreman and Ricardo Mayorga, and neither fight was a big one. Arum did a good job of matching Cotto against Antonio Margarito in a rematch last year, but the big fight was the Mayweather bout. That’s the one that gave Cotto a big payday, and it was one of his best fights in years. Cotto matches up well with Mayweather, and I think he would do even better against him in a rematch if possible.
