Burns-Mitchell winner may have to face Broner

Image: Burns-Mitchell winner may have to face BronerBy Scott Gilfoid: Who ever emerges the victor of the September 22nd fight between WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (34-2, 9 KO’s) and #1 WBO Kevin Mitchell (33-1, 24 KO’s) may not have much time to enjoy their title because the World Boxing Organization is going to be making unbeaten Adrien Broner (24-0, 20 KO’s) the #1 WBO contender and I really don’t see Mitchell or Burns being able to hang with Broner.

If Burns comes out on top in the Mitchell fight in September then he might as well vacate that strap like he did last time when Broner had him in his cross-hairs at super featherweight. Burns didn’t fight Broner and instead vacated his WBO title and moved up to lightweight. Well, there’s no escape now for Burns unless he wants to vacate again and move up another division. I’m sorry, but I really don’t think Burns will be able to do much at light welterweight.

Those arm bars and clinching that Burns likes to do won’t get the job done against Broner and it certainly won’t help him out against the likes of Danny Garcia or Juan Manuel Marquez. I just hope Burns stays put and defends his WBO lightweight title against Broner so we can finally see how Burns does when he faces someone good for a change. I see Broner knocking Burns cold after he pries him off of him. As for Mitchell, if he ends up facing Broner he’ll last maybe one or two rounds at best. If Mitchell could only make it three rounds against Michael Katsidis then I see him making only to the 2nd round tops with Broner and that’s only if Mitchell runs.

Unfortunately, I don’t see Burns taking the fight with Broner. I imagine something come up that will prevent the fight from happening, and Broner will have to pick up the stripped title when Burns fails to face him.
