Image: Adamek-Walker: Tomasz facing another big puncherBy Sean McDaniel: Heavyweight contender Tomasz Adamek (46-2, 28 KO’s) is facing a risky opponent on September 8th in 6’4″ slugger Travis Walker (39-7-1, 31 KO’s) at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Adamek, 35, is looking to fight a big heavyweight with power that can partially mimic what he’ll be facing if he can get another title shot against one of the Klitschko brothers.

Adamek already got a shot against WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko last year, and was blown out in a one-sided 10 round TKO in September last year in Poland. Adamek looked out of place in the ring against the 6’7″ Vitali. He was too small, and looked like a light heavyweight with a coat up fat on him and just running around the ring trying to survive.

Taking on Walker could be trouble for Adamek, even though Walker is terribly flawed and has been beaten four times in the past two years. Walker can really punch, but he can’t seem to take a punch either. He either gets to you with his power or he gets taken out.

Adamek isn’t a big puncher at heavyweight and there’s clearly a worry that if his shots don’t have any affect on Walker, he could find himself in a fight where he’ll have to be able to take the big shots that Walker likes to throw. It’s a good thing that Adamek can move around well, because he may have to if he’s not able to hurt Walker with anything.

Adamek can’t stand in front of him for any length of time, because this isn’t Kevin McBride or Michael Grant, both of which Adamek beat in the not too distant past. Those guys barely threw any punches and made it easy for Adamek. Walker will throw punches, and the shots he’ll throw will be bombs. Adamek might be able to avoid a lot of them, but he’s going to have to eat a fair amount if he wants to try and take Walker early before he’s gotten a chance to land his bombs.
