Image: WBC says no to Canelo vs. Trout; suggest Freitas, Kirkland or MolinaBy Dan Ambrose: The World Boxing Council (WBC) has reportedly nixed the idea of Golden Boy Promotions matching their star WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (40-0-1, 29 KO’s) up against WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout in a unification bout on September 15th, according to fightnews.com.

Instead of allowing Alvarez to fight Trout, the WBC are suggesting Alvarez face former two division world champion Acelino Freitas ((39-2, 33 KO’s), James Kirkland (31-1, 27 KO’s) or Carlos Molina (19-5-2, 6 KO’s) instead.

Freitas, #15 WBC, has fought only once in the past five years, beating Michael Oliveira by a 9th round stoppage earlier this month. Beating Oliveira is one thing, but putting Freitas in with a fighter along the lines of Alvarez would be cruel to both Freitas and boxing fans. Freitas isn’t ready for that kind of fight after all those years out of the ring, and I don’t know that he’ll be ready even if he faces tune-up after tune-up for the next year. Too much time has gone by and he’s fighting three divisions above his last weight class.

Kirkland is a poor choice for Alvarez because he recently tore up his right shoulder in his win over Molina and his shoulder still won’t be ready by September 15th after he underwent shoulder surgery to fix the problem.

Molina is coming off of a loss to Kirkland, so that makes him a lousy choice to land a fight against Alvarez. Who want to see that kind of fight. Golden Boy Promotions is hoping to attract fans to this fight, but if they put Molina in with Alvarez, it will be a major turn-off for boxing fans.
