Image: Warren sees Burns-Mitchell fight as a potential classicRicky Burns showing good form in holding onto the arm of Paulus Moses to keep him from fighting By Scott Gilfoid: Promoter Frank Warren is really excited about the fight he put together between WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (34-2, 9 KO’s) and Kevin Mitchell (33-1, 24 KO’s) on September 22nd in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom. Warren believes that this fight can become a classic.

Warren said to thesun.co.uk “This week I announced a fight [Burns vs. Mitchell] that I’m really excited about. It has the potential to be a modern day classic.”

I wish I could agree with him. For it to be a classic, we’d have to make some substitutions I’m afraid. While Mitchell has been a good little domestic level fighter, he got royally exposed the first and only time he stepped it up against a world class opponent in Michael Katsidis in 2010. We saw how Mitchell was blown out in three rounds. Mitchell hasn’t faced anyone that I consider a good fighter since then, beating Felix Lora and John Murray. No, this isn’t a classic material opponent. Okay, so we’d have to remove Mitchell from the equation if we’re looking for a true classic fight and insert Adrien Broner.

Now we’re talking about a good fighter here. Second of all, it wouldn’t be a classic fight because Burns is too lacking in talent. It might be a classic mismatch, but not a classic if you’re looking for a competitive fight that’s interesting to watch. Burns would be stove-piped by Broner in a easy fight for Broner.

For this fight to be a true classic, you’d have to take Burns out as well and substitute Robert Guerrero in his place. I rate Guerrero as worlds better than Burns and it would be a mismatch if Guerrero and Burns were to ever fight, and I think the boxing world would agree with me on that. I’d love to see a fight between Broner and Guerrero. Now that would be an excellent fight. But as far as the Mitchell-Burns fight goes, that’s more domestic consumption in my view.
