Image: Schaefer rules out Austin Trout for Canelo on 8/15By Dan Ambrose: According to Dan Rafael, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer doesn’t plan on matching his star WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez against WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout on September 15th.

Rafael said on his twitter “Richard Schaefer tells me this evening: ‘It won’t be Trout and it won’t be Showtime.'”

Well if it’s not going to be Trout that winds up facing Alvarez on 8/15, then its going to be someone much worse than I thought it would be.

Here are some of the top names that Schaefer will be pooling from to put in with Alvarez:

Carlos Quintana
Cory Spinks
Cornelius Bundrage

I don’t know about you but I have no interest whatsoever ever in seeing Alvarez facing any of those guys, especially if it means having to pay to watch him beat them. I’m not even keen at the idea of watching Alvarez fight any of them period. Those are mismatches, but I won’t be surprised at all if one of them end up getting selected by Schaefer. Just look at the guys that Alvarez has been facing in the past couple of years: Brian Camechis, Jose Miguel Cotto, Luciano Leonel Cuello, Carlos Baldomir, Lovemore N’dou, Matthew Hatton, Ryan Rhodes, Alfonso Gomez, Kermit Cintron and Shane Mosley. There’s a definite pattern here, isn’t there?

Golden Boy Promotions has been matching Alvarez against a lot of older guys and/or fighters that have been around for awhile and aren’t any threat to beating Alvarez. I’m not impressed with Trout as a fighter, but I figured that Schaefer wouldn’t go for the idea of letting Alvarez face him because he’s too much of a step up for Alvarez from the fodder that Golden Boy has been feeding him.

Bundrage, Spinks and Quintana are right up the alley of the kinds of guys that Alvarez has been facing, and likely will continue facing until when and if he gets a big money fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. next year or in 2014. The last thing Golden Boy wants to do is have Alvarez get beaten by putting him in with someone that can actually still fight.
