Image: Quillin defeats Wright, looks flawed and beatableBy Jim Dower: Unbeaten middleweight contender Peter Quillin (27-0, 20 KO’s) defeated 40-year-old former junior middleweight champion Ronald “Winky” Wright (51-6-1, 25 KO’s) by a 10 round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. The final judges’ scores were 97-92, 99-91 and 98-91, all for the 28-year-old Quillin.

Quillin knocked Wright down in the 5th round with a long right hand to the head that Wright wasn’t expecting to get hit with.

This was the first fight for Wright in over three years, and for a fighter that’s been out of action as long as he has, he didn’t fight that badly. For a 40-year-old fighter coming off of two straight losses and three years of inactivity, Wright didn’t look that bad. Of course, he’s not going anywhere if he chooses to continue fighting, because he’s too old and he’s fighting out of his weight class. Wright’s best weight class was junior middleweight and he didn’t have the size to compete against the larger, stronger Quillin.

Quillin needs to learn how to throw more punches, apply more pressure and stop throwing so many long shots. He seems to telegraph his punches and he’s too much of a counter puncher. He’s a counter puncher that’s easy to hit. That wouldn’t be an issue if he didn’t have a questionable chin. Quillin has only faced one puncher in his career and he was hut on that one occasion. You got to give his promoters props for keeping him away from sluggers, but sooner or later this guy is going to get stretched when they put him in someone good.

If Gennady Golovkin and Sergio Martinez were able to hit Quillin as often as Wright did tonight, Quillin would be counting stars flat on his back. I’m not impressed with the guy, and I think he needs to get a new trainer and find someone new. He trains at the Wildcard gym in Los Angeles, and I think its time to move on if he wants to find success against the best in the division. They can’t keep matching him up against 40-year-olds.
