Image: Mike Jones' KO loss to Bailey ruins Pacquiao fight hopesBy Chris Williams: Bob Arum had high hopes of matching his previously unbeaten welterweight contender Mike Jones (26-1, 19 KO’s) up with Manny Pacquiao in a nice little Top Rank in house fight in the near future. Those dreams are pretty much finished with the 29-year-old Jones getting knocked cold in the 11th round by knockout artist Randall Bailey (43-7, 37 KO’s) last Saturday night.

Not only that, but Pacquiao’s loss to Tim Bradley also has messed up Arum’s plans, because Pacquiao can’t just move on to other fights now that he’s been beaten by Bradley. Sure, Pacquiao can move on if he wants to, but he’ll look like of silly looking other fights when he was exposed by Bradley and made to look old at times.

Arum saw Jones as a future world champion until he got crushed by a right uppercut from Bailey in the 11th round last Saturday. Jones was actually winning the fight until Bailey connected with that right hand. I mean, Jones was looking horrible, as he ran around the ring trying to avoid Bailey’s big shots.

But Jones definitely was winning the fight kind of by default, because Bailey wasn’t letting his hands go. However, when Bailey finally did start to throw punches in the 10th, he quickly had Jones on the canvas after nailing him with a big right hand. In the next round, Bailey took advantage of Jones attempting to throw a pawing jab by coming in between his guard with a monstrous right uppercut that knocked Jones clean out.

Arum is now going to have to figure out what he’s going to do with Jones. If he tries to go ahead and make a Jones-Pacquiao fight anyway next year, boxing fans will likely turn their noses up at such a mismatch by staying away from the venue and failing to purchase the fight on pay per view. Hopefully, Arum won’t cram the fight down the throats of the public by making it anyway just as he did with Joshua Clottey and Pacquiao, and Pacquiao-Mosley.
