The 31-year-old Maccarinelli only has until September to face McPhilbin or else his title will be stripped from him, and McPhilbin will be free to fight for the title against the next available contender.

Maccarinelli had all he could take of McPhilbin in their fight last March. Maccarinelli was viciously knocked down in the 1st round, and it looked like he was going to be stopped when the bell sounded 47 seconds early to end the round. This allowed a badly hurt Maccarinelli to escape the round. Maccarinelli was later knocked down again this time in the 3rd round.

It wasn’t as bad a knockdown but it showed that Maccarinelli was still available to McPhilin’s clubbing shots. However, McPhilbin completely gassed out and from the 4th round until the end of the fight in the 12th, McPhilbin looked exhausted. Maccarinelli was able to knock a tired McPhilbin down in the 9th but was unable to finish him off. Maccarinelli seemed to lack power and he wasn’t heavy enough for the weight. He had recently moved up from light heavyweight and it was too quick of a move for him.

Maccarinelli might be better off giving up the British strap and avoiding McPhilbin altogether because if he can’t fight better than he did last time then he’ll probably get knocked out next time he faces him. Maccarinelli might have a chance of stopping McPhilbin in the 1st or 2nd round if he wasn’t weight drained from wasting time at 175.
