Image: Has Vitali Klitschko chosen his next opponent?By John F. McKenna (McJack): Rumors continue to circulate in the boxing world and particularly in Germany that World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (44-2, 40 KO’s) has chosen unbeaten heavyweight Manuel Charr (21-0, 11 KO’s) to be his next opponent. September 1 and September 8 are out there as possible dates for “Dr. Ironfist” to return to the ring after injuring his left shoulder in February.

In his February outing Vitali won a unanimous hard fought decision over Dereck Chisora (15-3, 9 KO’s) injuring his shoulder in the early rounds. The infamous brawl to end all brawls followed Vitali’s victory at the post fight press conference in Germany.

The brawl between former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (25-2, 23 KO’s) and Chisora and his entourage garnered far more press than the fight itself with hundreds of articles being written about it worldwide. The brawl in fact took on a life of its own and allowed Haye, a genius at self promotion, to come up with a popular electronic game depicting him knocking off the head of Chisora.

Haye and Chisora are slated for a showdown on July 14 at Upton Park inLondon to settle the score. That fight however is “iffy” at best with the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBC) and the World Boxing Council (WBC) both opposing the fight. British promoter Frank Warren insists that the fight will go on as scheduled despite being threatened with sanctions if he goes ahead with the promotion. Warren had to go to the Luxembourg Boxing Federation in order to receive sanctioning for the proposed fight. Problematic for Warren, is the fact that reportedly 28,000 tickets have already been sold.

Chisora had his boxing license removed by the BBBC after the brawl with Haye. Haye retired last October upon reaching his 31st birthday, thus giving up his boxing license.

Haye however left the door open at that time for a possible return to the ring if he could fight one of the Klitschko’s.

It is highly unlikely that “Dr. Ironfist” will close out his magnificent career against Charr, who outside of Germany is basically an unknown and appears to have no chance of being competitive. You get the sense that Vitali, who is a pretty good chess player, is jockeying for position and has not abandoned the idea of fighting Haye. It may be that Charr is just a tune up for a bigger fight down the road.

Vitali is near the end of his career and it is well known that he wants to ride off into the sunset after having disposed of Haye. Try as he might however through his manager Bernd Boente he has not been able to come to terms with “The Hayemaker”. Both Haye and his manager/trainer Adam Booth are known to be tough negotiators. Both sides blame the other for the non happening of a Vitali Klitschko – David Haye fight.
