Image: Canelo Alvarez, CMB, Golden Boy: Take it or go awayBy Reynaldo Sanchez: Since Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) announced to the Mexican WBC super welterweight champion Saul Canelo Álvarez, to fight next September 15th. It began a history that connects the Paul Williams and James Kirkland tragedies. Now, that both fighters are disabled to face Álvarez, the WBC fell down in a dilemma hard to avoid.

The WBC established this Canelo defense as compulsory, and the situation set itself on them so delicate, in our opinion, they go into an intersection. The WBC must hold up the fight as mandatory or definitively to capitulate inside the Golden Boy Promotions and the Canelo’s manager interests.

The fight Álvarez-Lara can do important numbers in PPV. Lara in our opinion, would be the first opponent with similar conditions in the Alvarez entire career and the only thing that affects the Golden Boy Promotions interests, it’s that Lara defeats Alvarez. The investment in the Mexican market and part of the Mexicans fans in USA, it would stop being a source of income and we understand that this might be the fear in Golden Boy Promotions that promote both fighters.

Nevertheless, the WBC situation as Organization that theoretically is whom must designate the next mandatory opponent for the Mexican champion, it’s very delicate. They are almost forced to choose Lara as mandatory opponent for Alvarez. And this, it commits an outrage against the Golden Boy Promotions benefit. If GBP: who promotes Lara and Alvarez doesn’t accept the WBC guideline. This Organization owned by Don José Sulaiman doesn’t have another option than to take away the super welterweight title and to declare it vacant.

Last Saturday June 2nd, Oscar de La Hoya, Richard Schaefer and Saul Alvarez attended the fight Austin Trout vs Delvin Rodríguez. In our opinion, this might mean that they are looking for a fight against Trout. My question is: will it allow the WBC that Oscar de la Hoya should reject the number one in the WBC ranking (Lara) and organizes a fight against Austin Trout?

We even don’t know what Golden Boy will do about the next Álvarez opponents. What we know is that the Erislandy Lara manager will not allow them to be eliminated easily. DeCubas Jr Lara’s manager, said to us that if they don’t respect his place as challengers in line for the title. Possibly they will get a dispute. Golden Boy Promotions should pay an “step side” to Lara transfers his place as official challenger.
