The Future of Juan Manuel Marquez

Image: The Future of Juan Manuel MarquezBy Duke Pahulu: Juan Manuel Marquez is set to face Zab Judah at Cowboys Stadium in the summer on PPV. I like the matchup. As we all know, Marquez fights really well against southpaws and Judah will make it interesting for the first half of the fight. But this fight doesn’t belong on PPV or Cowboys stadium.

Because as great as Marquez is, the fact is that he’s a strong B-side for a PPV event. I know HBO doesn’t have the money to put this fight on regular HBO but they should have offered the fight to Showtime. To be honest, the only three fighters who deserve to be on PPV are Mayweather, Pacquiao and Cotto.

The only way to make this fight PPV worthy is if they stack the card with heavy hitters. I know that Brandon Rios was originally set for Marquez before he got caught up against Richard Abril but he’s still an entertaining fighter if matched well at 140. A fight with Danny Garcia or Mike Alvarado would be blood baths. Since this fight is set in Texas, I’d like to see James Kirkland in there with someone like Carlos Quintana, who had a solid win last Saturday.

I know that Carlos Molina got robbed but who wants to see him hug it out with Kirkand again? I digress, After Judah, who is left for Marquez. He can always fight Erik Morales but that fight kind of lost its luster after the Danny Garcia fight. Amir Khan and Lamont Peterson are set to move up to welter after their rematch so all that’s left are the young guns and stepping stones.

We all know that Marquez wants another crack at Pacquiao and he may get it if he beats Bradley and the Mayweather fights falls through yet again. But who are we fooling, Manny’s people know that Marquez is simply Pacquiao’s equal and time won’t change that.

So it’s safe to say Marquez will spend the rest of his career holding off the young guns of 140. If it’s any thing like his bouts against Michael Katsidis and Juan Diaz, it’s be a joy to witness the last act of Juan Manuel Marquez.
