The 30-year-old Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions, told Fightnews.com “Sergio is and will stay our main target – at least in this weight class.”

Golovkin, of course, also wants to fight the WBA Super World middleweight champion Felix Sturm, but getting him into the ring has proven to be next to impossible because Sturm and his promoters haven’t shown much interest in tangling with the hard hitting former Olympian Golovkin.

If Golovkin can’t get either Martinez or Sturm to fight him, he may look to take on some of the big names at 168lbs. Golovkin has the power to beat the top super middleweights, and he already knocked out Lucian Bute in the amateur ranks and that was with head gear on.

Golovkin looked great in his last fight, beating Makoto Fuchigami by a 3rd round TKO last Saturday night in Ukraine. Golovkin knocked Fuchigami down twice before the fight was halted at 1:17 of the round. Although Golovkin has taken some criticism for facing the light hitting Fuchigami, but what do you expect Golovkin to do? Fuchigami is ranked #8 by the World Boxing Association, and available to take the fight. He was certainly ranked high enough, and with no one else available for Golovkin to fight, it makes sense that he would take a fight with him rather than sitting idle.

It’s doubtful that Martinez will accept a fight against Golovkin because there’s too much risk and not enough reward for him. Golovkin isn’t well known in the United States right now, and that mean that a fight between Golovkin and Martinez would attract a lot of interest.
