By David Coleman: The ever growing circus surrounding Amir Khan ahead of his much anticipated rematch with Lamont Peterson reached an all new low this morning, when the cancellation of the May 19th bout was announced.

WBA and IBF light-welterweight champion, Peterson tested positive for synthetic testosterone in a voluntary drug test taken on March 19th. Adding further fuel on the fire, Peterson’s publicist, Andre Johnson, claimed the test showed up positive because of something Peterson took PRIOR to the first meeting between the two. This led to Khan labeling the Washington fighter a “cheat.”

Speaking to skysportsnews, Andre Johnson was keen to rubbish these claims, saying: “Lamont is not a cheat. He is not a steroid abuser. There’s no evidence of anabolic steroid abuse in his body or in his system. The doctor that saw him in Nevada determined he has low testosterone levels. There’s no way a guy with his type of level can test positive for an anabolic steroid that is testosterone-based. Lamont did nothing wrong. He’s not a doper. He’s not a cheater.”

The failed drug test is just the latest in a long list of scandals surrounding last years clash in Washington. Khan’s camp launched an official appeal to boxing authorities when mystery man, Mustafa Ameen, was seen interfeering with judges scorecards at ringside.

Along with this, the Khan camp were unhappy with the referee’s decision to deduct 2 points from the Bolton man for “continuous pushing”. Add to this golden boy’s failure to put a rematch clause in the first contract and we have the makings of a Hollywood Blockbuster.

Regardless of the outcome to this saga, the wasted time and the unwanted media circus surrounding it, mean Lamont Peterson is a name Amir Khan will be keen to forget.
