Williams had his spinal cord crushed in a motorcycle accident last Sunday in Georgia, and doctors give him very little chance of ever walking again.

According to USA Today, the Marietta police department released the following statement in part about Williams driving his motorcycle “At a high rate of speed…too fast for the conditions.”

In an interview with WXIA-TV Atlanta, Williams said “We had a big fight [against Saul Alvarez] supposed to be coming up. I’m sorry that it got pushed back. But that’s alright. That’s the way the cookie crumbles…I’m going to be walking, I know that. That’s how I feel. If I can’t walk, then oh well…I’ll be on a boat fishing.”

Williams’ chances of walking again are quite low. However, there’s always a chance and more will be learned after his surgery on Thursday. Williams will be facing a long period of recovery after surgery and only then will it be understood about his chances of being able to walk again.

Williams was supposed to be fighting 21-year-old WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez on September 15th on pay-per-view. This was in way like a second chance for Williams, because he’d suffered a bad knockout loss to Sergio Martinez in November 2010 followed by a questionable 12 round majority decision victory over Erislandy Lara in July of last year.

Williams had won his last fight against fringe contender Nobuhiro Ishida in February of this year, but the fight against Alvarez was going to be Williams’ big chance of turning his career around. Unfortunately, the motorcycle accident took that opportunity away from Williams. Hopefully he recover from this accident and live a full life.
