Can’t Blame Floyd for Selecting Cotto

By Robert Elmore: WBA light middleweight champion Miguel Cotto turned down a fight with WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao and for good reason. Cotto did not want to return to 147, the welterweight limit, to fight Pacquiao.

Even when the fight was being talked about a catchweight of 150lbs, the offer was rejected. I believe Cotto learned his lesson the first time he fought Pac a catchweight. Miguel had options and saw that fighting Floyd Mayweather was the best option for him. He saw he could make more money than has while on Top Rank. He also believed that a change in his team; most notably his trainer; could be the very thing that can lead to a victory against his undefeated foe.

This fight is taking place at a comfortable weight for Cotto. He is on a 3 fight winning streak and has confidence in himself. Yet and still, some fans have managed to flip this on Mayweather in saying that he picked Cotto because he knows he’s going to win. Let’s get one thing straight. MIGUEL TOOK THE FIGHT. HE ACCEPTED THE CHALLENGE.

Nobody forced this fight on him. He could have easily said no and moved to another fight. It seems pretty obvious to me that he believes he can beat Floyd or else he wouldn’t have taken the fight. He must have wanted to test himself against one of the best technicians in boxing. If nothing else, both fighters know that this fight is both a risk and reward. Floyd has averaged over a million buys while Cotto is no slouch being the third highest pay per view attraction. What’s even more interesting was the fight was easy to put together without any involvement from Arum. Had Cotto re-uped with Top Rank, this fight would not be happening. But again, MIGUEL SAID YES TO FIGHT FIGHTING FLOYD. It takes two men to make a fight happen. PERIOD
