Image: Broner to make easy work of Escobedo on July 21stBy Scott Gilfoid: The World Boxing Organization has done WBO super featherweight champion Adrien Broner (23-0, 19 KO’s) a huge favor by ranking Vicente Escobedo (26-3, 15 KO’s) as the 22-year-old Broner’s mandatory challenger.

Believe it or not, but this makes things a lot easier for Broner because he only has to trounce Escobedo, a fighter that had already been exposed in the past in losses to Robert Guerrero and Michael Katsidis.

Broner is far and away the best fighter in the super featherweight division. There’s no one at this weight to give him any kind of problems. He was hoping to face Ricky Burns when he held the WBO super featherweight title, but Burns skedaddled just when Broner was on the verge of fighting him. That would have been perfect for Broner to face Burns.

I think it would have been another 1st round knockout win for Broner along the same lines as his quick KO stoppage of Jason Litzau in June of last year. But with Burns now out of the division, Broner missed the opportunity to take the title off him while he still held the belt.

Broner won the vacant WBO title in November last year, beating Vicente Martin Rodriguez. He’s since defended it successfully once, beating Eloy Perez by a 4th round stoppage. The promoting of Escobedo into the number #1 spot previously held by Perez is more like a game of contenders being put in the hot seat to be taken out with ease.

Escobedo isn’t a threat to Broner, and he’s just going to get blasted out of there in a few rounds. Escobedo has a decent chin, so there is a possibility that he could make it the full 12, but I’m not counting on it. Broner hits too hard and Escobedo has no defensive skills to speak of.
