Rigondeaux will be fighting high volume, high pressure fighter Teon Kennedy on June 9th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Bob Arum, Rigondeaux’s promoter, said this about the Rigondeaux-Kennedy fight to boxingsocialist.com “For Rigondeaux, he can prove once and for all that he can perform at the level that the fans want to see.”

The problem with Rigondeaux is that he’s a counter puncher, and he doesn’t need to initiate things in order to win. His body punching is so good that he scores knockouts from body punching from landing counter shots. It’s not interesting to some to see Rigondeaux waiting and setting traps for his lethal body shots, but you can argue with the results. He’s knocking everyone one out.

Rigondeaux was hoping to get a fight against WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire, another one of Arum’s Top Rank stable fighters. It’s a natural fight that the boxing public would love to see, but Donaire isn’t interested in taking on Rigondeaux, seeing him as a dull fighter because he doesn’t initiate things.

Donaire is one of those fighters that needs an opponent to take big swings so he can land his own counter shots. He’s found out the hard way that he doesn’t do well when he faces guys that hang back and just look to counter him. Rigondeaux would likely be a nightmare for Donaire because of his body punching and counter shots that he’d be landing. Donaire likes to take big swings, and Rigondeaux would be like a kid in candy store against this kind of a fighter.

Kennedy is going to give Rigondeux a lot of opportunities to end this fight early on June 9th. Kennedy is one of those types of fighters that just throws caution to the wind and fires punch after punch, seemingly without any thought of his own self defense. He’s not going to do well against Rigondeaux fighting like that.
