Image: Sexton to give David Price a good chin test on May 19thBy William Mackay: Whether unbeaten heavyweight David Price (12-0, 10 KO’s) realizes this or not, he’s taking a big step up in competition against the in shape and highly technical Sam Sexton (15-2, 6 KO’s) next month in a fight for the vacant British heavyweight title at the Aintree Equestrian Centre, in Liverpool, UK.

Although the 28-year-old Price’s last fight against Big John McDermott was supposed to be a step up for him, it really wasn’t because McDermott was simply too fat and too slow to make much contact in the fight before Price obliterated him in a 1st round knockout.

Sexton is different. He has a great jab, good reach and good enough to take Price out if he lands something with full force. Sexton has a pair of losses to Dereck Chisora in fights where Chisora simply put a lot of heavy pressure on Sexton and was able to wear him down. But but not before Sexton was able to land a lot of heavy shots and hard jabs in losing.

Price has a chin that a lot of boxing fans see as weak. At the pro level, we haven’t seen Price hurt by any of his previous opponents. However, he hasn’t faced anyone good, so it’s not been much of a statement about his chin that he’s not been hurt. But at the amateur level, Price was hurt at least a couple of times against 2008 Olympic super heavyweight gold medalist Roberto Cammarelle and Bermane Stiverne. Both of those fighters took Price out with shots that nearly took his head off, and it’s not surprising that he wasn’t able to stand up long against those guys.

Price will probably try and rush Sexton early to see if he can blitz him before he gets properly warmed up. This has become Price’s style of fighting as of late with him rushing his opponents early and taking them out within three rounds. In his last four fights, Price has two 1st round knockouts, one 2nd round knockout and one third round knockout. This kind of suggests that Price will look to take Sexton out quickly before he’d had enough time to get warmed up to start throwing his jabs and combinations. Price has to get Sexton before he gets his chin tested by Sexton, because he’ll definitely give Price a lot of problems if he’s able to stay in there for the full 12 rounds. I give Sexton a decent chance of scoring a knockout against Price if he comes out slugging and earn his respect immediately.
