Image: Mosley should call it a day after Alvarez beats him on May 5thBy Dallan O’Donnell: “Sugar” Shane Mosley has had one of the greatest careers in the modern era. He is a sure fire future hall of famer when his time comes but something tells me the star that once shone so bright at the top of the boxing world is about to see his final moments and fizzle out.

Mosley has not had a victory since 2009 when he knocked Antonio Margarito out in stunning fashion. Since then he has been beaten twice, very convincingly also and had a very lack lustre draw against a very poor opponent Sergio Mora, after which I thought he should have called it a day.

He should have retired from the sport, instead he took on Manny Pacquiao (after the Mora draw and after being destroyed by Floyd Mayweather Jr.) Manny thought he took the fight as one last pay day and it looked that way during the bout. He never looked a danger to Manny. Even after that defeat Mosley refuses to retire. He feels he has something left to offer the sport, unfortunately he does not.

He is still a big name, fans remember his classic wins over Oscar De La Hoya and so we should, but if he continues to fight for much longer he will soon become a “stepping stone” for young fighters. I do believe every great fighter has one last great fight somewhere inside, that the fire can be re-lit again but for Mosley it won’t come on May 5th.

He takes on one of the sports hottest young fighters, unbeaten Saul Alvarez. Before the Mosley fight was announced Alvarez was touted as a potential opponent for Floyd Mayweather Jr., that alone shows how highly he is thought of. Another writer on Boxingnews24.com called Mosley a “sacrificial lamb” for Alvarez, I wouldn’t disagree.

Mosley may be dangerous for four to six rounds however after that he will be easy picking. Alvarez may even be able to knock Mosley out. Hopefully we will see him finish the fight, not have a knockout defeat as one of his last fights.

I will stick my neck on the line and say that Alvarez will stop Mosley. He will most likely end his career. But being a proud champion he may fight one last time which would not be a good idea. Hopefully he sees sense and does decide to call it a day and end a very respectful and legendary career. Follow me on twitter @dallan09
