Image: Margarito takes easy fight against Perry on 5/26By Dan Ambrose: Former IBF/WBA/WBO welterweight champion Antonio Margarito (38-8, 27 KO’s) has decided to take an easy 10 round fight against 2nd tier fighter Abel Perry (18-5, 9 KO’s) next month on May 26th at the Casino Del Sol, in Tucson, Arizona.

Margarito, 34, has been having a hard time finding wins lately, having lost three out of his last times he fought but against quality opposition. Margarito will be moving back to facing lesser opposition in the form of 33-year-old Perry just to get back in the winning ways.

Perry has only fought one reasonably good opponent his entire career in James De La Rosa four years ago in 2008, and Perry made De La Rosa look like a champion in that fight, losing by a 2nd round knockout when he was planted face first on the canvas from a right hand.

Perry has face hands, decent hand speed but atrocious defensive skills. He’s so easy to hit and seems to have problems when getting hit hard. Margarito may have lost a lot of his hand speed, but he’ll be able to take Perry out quickly as soon as he starts connecting with any regularity in the fight.

Margarito’s surgically operated on right eye gave him problems in his last fight against WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto last December. Margarito, #8 WBA, might have won the fight had he not suffered the eye problem that eventually caused the stoppage after the 9th.

Margarito won’t have to worry about Perry giving him any problems because he won’t make it far enough to swell up Margarito’s bad eye. I do see it swelling, but not to the extent to what it was last time against Cotto. Perry’s chin is too brittle and his defense not good enough for him to be able to stay in for more than three or four rounds at best unless he decides to run. If he runs, he won’t get the decision, because Margarito is the name in this fight and Perry is just being brought in as the opponent.
