Manny vs. Floyd: The age old debate

Image: Manny vs. Floyd: The age old debateBy Marc Medrano: It seems that the age old and sometimes tired debate of who would win the “mega” fight between the undefeated and ever controversial Floyd Mayweather and the Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao will never die.

It appears as though this topic will never cease to rouse the opinions of true fight fans, as well as casual spectators with limited knowledge of the sport. To say that one fighter would clearly and obviously win is simply the point of view of the latter of the two.

On one hand you have an undefeated fighter whose style has proven difficult if not impossible to penetrate. Mayweather’s record proves too many faithful followers that he is truly the best and contested by none.

Countless times has Floyd entered the ring and proven his opponent unworthy of the task at hand. This style on many occasions has proven to be a boring fight style and hardly worth the viewer’s money. The one thing that cannot be denied is the fact that no fighter has had the ability to beat Floyd at a game he plays all too well.

Certain fighters have given glimpses of a potential way to defeat Floyd ( Castillo, De la hoya, and a single sweet shot by Sugar Shane ) yet all have fallen short of doing it. Floyd has so far proven an uncanny ability to make adjustments in the ring which adapt and overcome his opponent’s new found confidence. So it is not difficult to see why The Money Team has so many faithful fans.

On the other hand you have the Filipino Icon whose style and persona drives an equally if not greater amount of spectators to their television set to watch his hands fly. Manny’s record is not spotless and a few have proven how to beat him (in his earlier years at least). What Manny brings to the table are equally if not quicker hands and the wiliness to engage in a fan friendly brawl. Manny’s style of hit and be hit brings the boxing world what it has been lacking for a few years…excitement.

Pacman has had problems with certain styles and this is a well-known fact. The thing that cannot be argued is the fact that his wiliness to fight and current win streak against top level fighters proves him to be one of the all-time greats as well. In my opinion there will always be those who like or dislike either one of these two fighters based on who they have chosen to follow.

We as spectators know that Floyd will go into a shell and pick his shots and many will land with laser like accuracy, however he only does this once his opponent has stop punching allowing Floyd to get into a comfortable position. The question has to be asked will this be enough against a fighter who seldom seems willing to stop punching for long enough for him to do this. We also know that with Manny’s willingness to let his hands go this will leave many opportunities for a master counter puncher such as Floyd. My humble opinion is this fight will go to the fighter who wants it most. The fighter who is willing to go out and take the bragging right that is rightfully his. This argument will only be settled in the ring by these two prize fighters. As fans all we can continue to do is wait and debate.
