Image: Khan's adjustments for Peterson rematch will likely be more runningBy William Mackay: Amir Khan said recently that he’s seen the best of Lamont Peterson and that he won’t be any better or different in their rematch on May 19th. Khan says he himself will be different because he won’t be making the same mistakes he did last time he fought Peterson last December and lost a 12 round decision.

Khan and his trainer Freddie Roach have said they’re won’t be a mistake made in the rematch with Khan fighting with his back against the ropes. Khan is going to stay in the center of the ring at all times. But I don’t believe that. I think if there are going to be some real adjustments Khan makes in this fight, it’s going to be one where Khan does even more running than he did last time.

Khan isn’t going to want to get hit and Peterson is going to pressure him even more in the rematch than he did in their fight last December, because Peterson already has the mental image burned in his head of how he was able to dominate Khan with pressure. It was Khan’s last stand and he was forced to make a hasty retreat, shoving and pulling down on Peterson’s head while trying to escape his nonstop shots. Khan fought in an all out retreat mode from the 4th round on, and now he’s talking about wanting to fight in a slick manner in the rematch in order to avoid getting hit. That means Khan’s adjustments will involve him running from Peterson and looking bad.

There really isn’t much Khan can do to make changes for the rematch aside from staying off the ropes and not shoving as much. I think Khan may stay off the ropes, but I don’t see him slowing down in his shoving, and pulling down on Peterson’s head to try and slow him down from his pressure came. Khan can’t handle pressure fighters and he’ll resort to running and fouling to get away from it.
