Image: Khan: I got too brave against Peterson last timeBy William Mackay: Speaking about himself in the third person, former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-2, 18 KO’s) gave a big hint about how he’s going to be fighting in his rematch against IBF/WBA 140 pound champ Lamont Peterson (30-1-1, 15 KO’s) by saying that he was too courageous in their fight last December when Khan was beaten by a 12 round decision.

Khan told Fighthype.com “I think we got too brave. I think the best thing we an do now is to go back to what we do best…[Floyd] Mayweather [and Manny] Pacquiao – they always stick to what they know best.”

I like how Khan compares himself to Mayweather and Pacquiao, as if he’s got it made and is in the same league as both of them. That’s kind of funny. Khan gets beaten by Breidis Prescott and Peterson and likely would have been beaten by Marcos Maidana had the referee not broken up the action when Khan was getting hammered in the 10th round after getting hurt by Maidana. Those are three very un-Mayweather & Pacquiao performances from Khan. I think it’s very doubtful that Mayweather and Pacquiao would struggle against Prescott, Maidana and Peterson, but Khan did.

The comment about Khan being too brave in his loss to Peterson kind of gives away Khan’s fight strategy for their May 19th rematch. If Khan is saying he was too brave, which is hard to believe because he was running most of the fight, then it suggests that he’s going to really run in the rematch. I can just see, Khan running around the ring in lap after lap while Peterson chases him around the ring.

That would make for a very un-Mayweather-esque performance from Khan. If his whole idea is to show that he’s worthy of fighting Floyd, then running from Peterson all night long won’t be the way to do it. And if Khan is going to be using his fouls – shoving, pulling down on the head and putting Peterson in headlocks – then it’s going to look especially bad. If the referee lets Khan foul, then it’ll put a big stink on the fight for Khan if he somehow is able to win the fight.

Khan went onto say that he’s not bothered by Peterson’s power, but he believes that Peterson will be bothered by his own power. Why Khan has arrived at the belief is beyond me because he didn’t hurt Peterson in their fight last December. He did get a knockdown, but that was from Khan hitting Peterson with a forearm to the shoulder that knocked him down when he was off balance by the ropes.
