Image: Mensah defeats Katsidis by 10 round majority decisionBy Jim Dower: Lightweight Michael Katsidis’ career is in tatters after Katsidis was upset by little known light welterweight Albert Mensah (20-3-1, 7 KO’s) by a 10 round majority decision on Friday night at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The final judges’ scores were 98-92, 96-94 and 95-95.

Katsidis threw a ton of punches in the fight, but he wasn’t landing cleanly enough, and Mensah was really slick in avoiding his shots and firing back with his own. Katsidis fought best in the early part of the fight, but then later one he started to fade and looked like he was throwing without power.

The defeats was a huge blow for Katsidis’ career, as he’s now lost four out of his last five fights. It’s one thing losing to guys like Juan Manuel Marquez, Robert Guerrero, and Ricky Burns, but quite another thing to get beaten by a very average fighter with no power like Mensah.

I can’t think of too many fighters that I can see Mensah beating in the top 15, aside from the weaker ones. Katasidis made a royal mistake in moving up in weight to fight at 140lbs when he was perfect for the lightweight division. He should think about retiring or moving back down in weight to lightweight or super featherweight if he can make it to that weight.
