Cotto will already be defending his WBA junior middleweight strap, but the WBC Diamond trinket will be an amusing addition to the collection of straps.

The WBC Diamond belt has a value of $50,000 due to the jewels on it. It’s an honorary strap for big fight occasions such as Mayweather-Cotto. It was given to Manny Pacquiao in 2009. It’s unknown how much of a sanctioning fee will be needed for this championship belt to be up for grabs. I can’t imagine a lot since it’s a new title. It’ll look good with Mayweather carrying it around the ring after he takes care of Cotto on May 5th. Thus far, according to the Record, Mayweather, Pacquiao and Bernard Hopkins are the only three that has won the Diamond strap in the past. It’s kind of interesting but seems like something that’s not really needed other than something to throw around to impress casual boxing fans. I suppose a Diamond title sounds a lot better than a regular three-letter alphabet title name for casual boxing fans looking for glamor.

Mayweather has got a big advantage in talent in this fight. Cotto is going to have to gun for a knockout if he wants to get the win and that’s going to be tough given his so-so performances in the past when facing quality opposition. It’s been three years since Cotto last fought someone good. He’s had a nice three year vacation from quality fighters and that’s obviously helped his career out immensely, as he’s picked up the WBA title off of one of his former promoter Bob Arum’s fighters and defended it a couple of times against an old Ricard Mayorga and Antonio Margarito coming off of three eyes surgeries.
