There’s little chance Alvarez-Mosley upstages Cotto vs. Mayweather

However, in the case of the May 5th card headlined by Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Miguel Cotto, I kind of doubt it. In fact, I think the Alvarez-Mosley fight will have problems upstaging any main event that you could think of simply because Mosley doesn’t have much left in the tank after all these years.

Mosley probably sees this fight as some kind of second chance for him after disappointing losses to Floyd Mayweather Jr., Manny Pacquiao and a horrible performance against Sergio Mora in September 2010, but I don’t see Mosley having enough left to push the 21-year-old Alvarez out of 1st gear to test him in any way. It’s a good little payday fight for Mosley and I’m sure he’s happy to get it after his dismal performance against Pacquiao last May in losing by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision.

But I think the well is dry for Mosley, and there’s nothing he can get out of what’s left of his skills. There isn’t a fountain of youth for the guy to go to in order to turn back the clock 4000 days. He’s gotten older, and the reflexes aren’t what they used to be. He sees a target but can’t pull the trigger like he once did a decade ago. Alvarez may not have have been able to compete with a younger Mosley, but he’s more than good enough to beat this version of Mosley on youth and power alone.

The Cotto-Mayweather fight will be interesting for three rounds or so and after that Mayweather will quickly pull away and give Cotto a beating in the process of possibly stopping him. But the Alvarez-Mosley fight doesn’t promise even that. Mosley is too old and has lost too much of his skills through old age.
