Image: Stieglitz vs. Groves on 4/28By William Mackay: Dan Rafael is reporting that WBO super middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz’s promoters has won the purse big with #3 WBO George Groves’ promoter with a winning bid of $792, meaning the Groves-Stieglitz fight will now be taking place in the 30-year-old Stieglitz’s adopted country of Germany on April 28th rather than in the UK.

This in turn puts a tremendous amount of pressure on Groves to change his fighting style from a hit and run type of fighter in the David Haye mold to that of a slugger. Groves will not beat the champion Stieglitz by using same fighting style that he’s been using. Groves likes to circle a lot, using massive amounts of feints with few punches thrown and landed. Stieglitz is the exact opposite. He doesn’t bother with feints or constant circular movement and instead he likes to throw a lot of punches. It’ll look really bad if Stieglitz is forced to chase Groves around the ring like James DeGale did in their fight last year in May. That’s not a winning situation for Groves. He might be able to beat the domestic level opposition with his hit and run style, but not a champion.

Groves recently pulled out of his March 16th scheduled fight against Kenny Anderson due to medical reasons. A lot of boxing fans think Groves pulled out of the dangerous rematch with Anderson in order to get a world title shot against Stieglitz. Whatever the case, Anderson will still be there if Groves gets beaten by Stieglitz. He won’t go anywhere. For Stieglitz’s part, he was scheduled to fight Mikkel Kessler on April 14th, but Kessler had to pull out of the fight due to a slow healing right hand. He’s had the same injury for quite some time and it’s healing slowly. But this may work out well for Stieglitz because the Kessler fight was going to be a really tough fight for him and few boxing fans thought he could win it. However, the Groves fight is a much better option because Groves doesn’t have the power, the jab or the boxing skills that Kessler has going for him. This is a much more winnable fight for Stieglitz.
