Image: Schaefer compares Khan to Mayweather; tells him to work on his defensive skillsBy Allan Fox: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer compared former IBF light welterweight champion Amir Khan to Floyd Mayweather Jr. recently saying that he needs to stop being so courageous in the ring and focus on using his skills more in upcoming rematch against Lamont Peterson on May 19th.

Schaefer no doubt is concerned that Khan could mess things up with his career by getting knocked out again if he tries to mix it up with Peterson a little too much when they meet again in May.

Schaefer said this to Sky Sports News “Sometimes Amir’s balls are too big for his own good. Look at Mayweather – he’s a master technician who knows how to use defensive and offensive skills… Amir has the skills, speed and power, but what he has to work on are the ring smarts and not to get carried away…he learned a lot from the Peterson fight.”

Floyd knows how to fight because he had a couple of really good teachers in uncle Roger Mayweather and his father Floyd Mayweather Sr., both of which are excellent at training defensive skills. Khan obviously hasn’t had the same kind of teachers to develop his defensive skills and he’s had to rely more on running and using other tricks like shoving, pulling down on his opponents’ heads and headlocks. These aren’t likely things that Roach taught Khan but rather things that Khan had before Roach. He’s got to learn how to fight because he doesn’t even have the beginnings of the skills that Mayweather has on the defensive side or the offensive side. Khan just throws fast shots without much accuracy like Floyd. He’s not throwing pin point shots but rather getting by with his hand speed advantage against opposition.

I don’t know whether Khan will learned anything from the Peterson loss. I expect Khan to run a lot in the rematch, and that’ll be no different than he did last time. If there is going to be a difference it’ll have to be with Khan not fouling as much. If he can show that he knows how to fight on the inside without shoving, pulling down on Peterson’s head or putting him in headlocks, then I can say he’s learned something. But I seriously doubt Khan will be able to change those parts of his game because they seem to be so well ingrained.
