According to fightnews.com, the fight could end up being for the full WBO title depending on what the current WBO champ Timothy Bradley decides to do. He’s got a fight coming up against WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao on June 9th. It’s unknown if Bradley will stay at welterweight or move back down to continue defending his 140 pound title.

By facing the 31-year-old Cuenca, Marquez puts himself in a situation where he’ll be in a good position to win his 4th division world title. It’s not so great that he’s facing a fighter with one of the most build up fluff records that you’ll ever see, but the important thing is that Marquez get in the position where he can win the full WBO title. However, instead of going after worthless straps, Marquez would be better off using his time more wisely by going after the best possible fights and the Cuenca fight is a pretty much worthless fight other than the fact it will put Marquez in the position to add a strap to his resume.

Cuenca, a southpaw, isn’t going to give Marquez any help in getting ready for a hoped for fourth fight against Manny Pacquiao because he’s incredibly slow of hand and foot, and well below Pacquiao in talent. If anything, a fight against Cuenca could end up hurting Marquez more than helping him because Pacquiao is so much faster and stronger than Cuenca, and Marquez won’t be improved for having fought him. To get ready for Pacquiao, you need to face faster guys with power, not slower guys with less power.
