Image: Khan can forget about Mayweather fight if he loses to Peterson in rematchBy William Mackay: Amir Khan is getting a second shot against Lamont Peterson, and he promises that he’s going to make it look easy in avenging his loss to Peterson from last December. However, you have to wonder because Khan looked so flustered and unable to deal with Peterson’s pressure without fouling repeatedly despite warnings from the referee to stop. A loss for Khan in his May 19th round with Peterson will likely put the final nail in the coffin for a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

That’s a hoped for fight against Mayweather Jr. for Khan, because Mayweather has never shown even the slightest bit of interest in facing Khan. It’s been all one-way interest with Khan talking about how he’s going to fight Mayweather Jr. someday and be the one to take away his unbeaten record. Khan already had a strike against him in trying to make that fight a reality with his 1st round knockout loss to Breidis Prescott from 2008, a fight that Khan never even attempted to avenge. And then last December, Khan got the second strike against him when he was beaten by a 12 round decision by Peterson in Washington, DC. Khan fought well for the first three rounds in that fight, but Peterson figured Khan out by the 4th round and began to pressure him and pound him. Khan responded by running, shoving, pulling down on Peterson’s head and by putting him in headlocks to try and escape some of the pressure being put on him. When Khan did try and fight Peterson, he found himself getting the worst of it. This led to Khan running even more and by late in the fight, Khan was looking pretty ragged.

Khan has to not only beat Peterson but he’s got to do it cleanly without the fouling in order to interest Mayweather. Floyd already said he doesn’t like Khan’s fighting style, saying he “runs too much.” If Khan runs around the ring all night long and gets a decision over Peterson fighting like that, it might as be a loss for Khan because Mayweather likely won’t want to fight someone like that. He’s not going to chase Khan around the ring at his age and who would blame him for not wanting to.
