Image: Kell Brook's July 7th opponent likely to be another easy markBy William Mackay: Kell Brook (27-0, 18 KO’s) will be back in the ring on July 7th in Sheffield against supposedly a big named opponent. Brook’s last opponent was supposed to be a big named opponent and instead he faced Matthew Hatton. There probably isn’t going to be a big name for Brook, because the big names are guys that would likely handle him with ease, like Devon Alexander, Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto.

Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn told Sky Sports “Kell delivered in a big way against Matthew and proved he is worth the hype. Now we will deliver ANOTHER big night for him against a top name that will announce soon.”

Another big night? Hatton is a fringe contender and that’s a big name? I think Hearn has some different ideas of what he sees as a big name compared to what I see. He says he wants 40-year-old Shane Mosley, Marcos Maidana and Paulie Malignaggi. That’s a no, no and no for a fight against Brook. Those aren’t going to go all the way to the UK to fight Brook even if they didn’t have other plans.

The problem is Hearn still doesn’t appear to be ready to put Brook in with a really good fighter that can test him despite Brook being in his 8th year as a pro.

There isn’t going to be anyone available for the July 7th date, at least not anyone that the boxing public cares about in any real way. Hearn can find another Hatton-caliber fighter and call that big name but it might look silly if Hearn keeps talking about Brook fighting the big names and then he keeps trotting out someone like Hatton. This isn’t a big name. What Hearn should do is hold off on talking about Brook facing a big name until he’s actually ready to put him in with a big name. Alexander, Berto, Ortiz or Mike Jones. Those are guys with big names, yet Hearn probably won’t put Brook within 1000 miles of those guys.
