Image: Guerrero-Aydin: Robert moves up two divisions to take on slugger Selcuk on 7/28By Eric Thomas: Robert Guerrero (29-1-1, 18 KO’s) will be moving up two entire divisions to take on WBC Silver welterweight champion Selcuk Aydon (23-0, 17 KO’s) on July 28th at the Shark Tank in San Jose, California. Guerrero, 28, is really ambitious and wants to take on the really big names in the welterweight division such as Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao as quick as possible.

What better way to get those fights by diving straight in and taking on one of the best fighters in the division in the hard hitting Aydin. To be sure, Aydin isn’t seen as the very best at 147, but he is at least a top 15 with bigger power than anyone else that Guerrero has yet fought during his career. A win over Aydin will put Guerrero in the top 15 in the welterweight division within striking distance of a fight against the big names if they’d only take notice of him and give Guerrero a shot.

He’ll have to do more than talk his way into a fight against Mayweather and Pacquiao, though, because he’s tried to talk it up and it’s not worked very well. Guerrero will have to soundly beat Aydin, preferably by knockout, and then go after the best guy he can get at 147 to future put himself in the position to lure Mayweather and Pacquiao into giving him a fight. I’m sure Guerrero would be happy if he could get someone like Kell Brook or Amir Khan, but I doubt he’ll get an offer from either of those guys even if he looks really impressive against Aydin.

Aydin has got excellent power and he’s able to throw his big shots from in close. Guerrero will have to be careful because Aydin will really be putting it on him and walking through his shots. He’s got a fast inside move and he’ll likely be trying to keep the fight in close on Guerrero. It’s going to be a bruising fight for Guerrero and he may end up wishing he had taken on a softer opponent for his first fight at welterweight by the time this ones over.
