Image: Groves could get title shot against the WBO champion soonBy William Mackay: According to ESPN, British super middleweight champion George Groves (14-0, 11 KO’s) could be getting a world title shot against the WBO super middleweight champion very soon. The World Boxing Organization is reportedly ordering a purse bid on March 12th in Hungary for a bout between Groves, #3 WBO, and the current WBO champion Robert Stieglitz.

However, the tricky part is that Groves is already scheduled for a dangerous rematch against Kenny Anderson (15-1, 11 KO’s) on March 16th, and Stieglitz has an April 14th title defense coming up next month against Mikkel Kessler.

Neither of those fights are a sure thing for Groves and Stieglitz and it seems rather bizarre to see the WBO already jumping the gun in setting up a purse bid with those fights still not having been completed yet. The only way it makes sense is if Stieglitz isn’t facing Kessler on April 14th, and then it would kind of make sense. But it still wouldn’t because Groves definitely has a fight coming up against Anderson next week, and you can’t be sure Groves will win that fight. To be setting up a purse bid right doesn’t seem like the right time for it. You would think that they would at least wait to find out what’s going to happen in those fights.

If Kessler beats Stieglitz and Groves beats Anderson, then Groves would become the mandatory for Kessler. However, former IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham reportedly has been mentioned as the next fight for the winner of the Stieglitz-Kessler fight, so it’s hard to say who exactly will be the next opponent. I suppose the WBO has force Groves to be next but I think it might not be a good thing for him, because Groves would have a terrible time against a fighter like Kessler. Groves barely beat James DeGale last year in May, and a lot of boxing fans think he should have lost that fight. Kessler is a solid professional with a lot of experience. Groves has a high ranking by the WBO, but he’s only fought one decent fighter – DeGale – during his career with the rest of them being domestic level opposition. Putting Groves in with Kessler could be like feeding him to a shark. I don’t think that would be a wise move to put the young 23-year-old with Kessler without more experience under his belt.
