Charr decisions Bidenko but looks average

By Jim Dower: Undefeated World Boxing Council International Silver heavyweight champion Manuel Charr (21-0, 11 KO’s) held onto his title with a 12 round unanimous decision over challenger Taras Bidenko (28-5, 12 KO’s) on Friday night at the Maritim Hotel, Cologne, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. The final judges’ scores were 116-111, 116-111 and 116-111.

The fight was pretty much one-sided with the slow plodding Charr landing jabs and combinations but now showing much in the way of skills or power. The defense clearly wasn’t there for Charr, although really didn’t matter because Bidenko had little in the way of power. It was a good fight to make Charr better than he is, but he still looked very, very average against a guy that was there to be knocked out if Charr could have found some power.

Bidenko started to come on in the middle rounds, landing some nice shots that Charr blocked with his face rather than his gloves. Bidenko had no problem landing his shots. But Charr was quick to fire back and he had the better power of the two, which wasn’t saying a whole lot.

Overall, I gave Charr a C- performance. He did enough to get the win over Bidenko but he was very average bordering on poor. I’m not sure his promoters see in him because there are a lot of better options out there than Charr. He lacks speed, defense and punching power. He might get a title shot one of these days if he keeps fighting 2nd tier opposition like Bidenko but he’s just going to lose. Charr isn’t beating of the champions in the heavyweight division nor the anyone in the top five. He’s too flawed and missing important ingredients to be a top fighter.
