Would Pavlik be allowed to fight Chavez Jr. if he moved back down to 160?

Image: Would Pavlik be allowed to fight Chavez Jr. if he moved back down to 160?By Allen Fox: Former WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (37-2, 32 KO’s) has an advantage that WBC Diamond middleweight champion Sergio Martinez doesn’t have in trying to land a fight against WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (45-0-1, 31 KO’s) in that Pavlik fights for Top Rank Promotions, the same promoter as Chavez Jr.

That should in theory help Pavlik get a fight against Chavez Jr., right? Wrong! Even if Pavlik were to move back down from 168 to try and get a fight against Chavez Jr., he’d be waiting probably for the remainder of his career – or at least until he was 100% shot – before he’d get put in with Chavez Jr. Why? Because Pavlik has huge power and would obliterate the slow moving, medium punching hulk of a Chavez Jr. within four of five rounds if given the opportunity.

The fight would make really good money, but the thing here is Chavez Jr. is a big ticket seller who also brings in huge ratings on HBO. Pavlik isn’t a huge ticket seller in comparison and he doesn’t bring in the same kinds of rating numbers as the young 25-year-old Chavez Jr. And while Pavlik would completely decimate Chavez Jr. and it would help his own career, it’s safe to say that Pavlik won’t get that chance.

It doesn’t matter that he fights for Top Rank. He would butcher Chavez Jr. like an expert and it would be so one-sided that Chavez Jr. would likely lose a substantial amount of fans in the process of getting beaten.

Pavlik and Chavez Jr. were mentioned in a possible fight a couple of years ago but Chavez’s management didn’t let the fight happen. It would have likely been even more brutal then because Chavez Jr. wasn’t ballooning up over 180 a couple of years ago. But it wouldn’t matter much if Chavez Jr. came into a Pavlik fight weighing over 180+. He would get blasted apart by Pavlik on the inside, outside or wherever.
