Shane Mosley vs. Father Time: a one horse race

Image: Shane Mosley vs. Father Time: a one horse raceBy Byron Wallin: I once again found myself feeling let down and bitterly disappointed with the sport of boxing this week, following the all too predictable announcement that veteran legend of the sport ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley (46-7-1, 39 KO’s) is being matched against supposed rising star Saul Alvarez (39-0-1, 29 KO’s) on May 5th.

This match may have been interesting if Mosley were five years younger, but the truth of the matter is that this fight will result in a shut out points decision for Alvarez. Or, if Mosley is now completely shot he may even be stopped for the first time in his career, by a boy that wouldn’t have even dared step into the ring with him during his prime.

I am a firm believer in the old acronym that every great fighter has one last great fight in them. Unfortunately, Mosley’s already took place back in 2009 in his stunning upset defeat of Antonio Margarito. In all likelihood, Mosley was probably shot then and was certainly far from his prime. However, he managed to summon the reserves to keep his arms pumping in a sustained attack one last time. Something we have never seen him reproduce since.

If only Mosley had bowed out on that high note, and we could have all felt proud to see the great fighter retire in deserved grand fashion.

Sadly, with the current state of boxing, and promoters who are looking to milk their fighters without risking a defeat on their record, Shane is still in great demand as a safe fight with a marquee name. However, don’t be fooled; the opponent that Alvarez beats on May 5th is not the fighter Shane Mosley, just a burnt out old shell.
